By the Exclusive Island Tours Ja Concierge Team

Welcome to Jamaica! Your first visit to the island is going to be full of sunshine, flavour and warm hospitality. A little preparation goes a long way, so here is our concierge team's practical guide to arriving, spending, tipping and getting around with total peace of mind.

1. Arriving at the Airport

Most visitors land at Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay, the gateway to the north coast resorts of Montego Bay, Negril, Falmouth and Ocho Rios. Guests heading to Kingston, the Blue Mountains or Port Antonio often fly into Norman Manley International Airport (KIN).

After landing you will pass through immigration and customs. During busy periods, lines can be long, which is why so many of our guests add VIP Fast Track. A personal escort meets you at the aircraft, takes you through priority processing, and lets you relax in the Club Mobay or Club Kingston lounge.

2. Book Your Transfer Before You Fly

Pre booking a private transfer is the single best thing you can do for a stress free arrival. Your driver meets you at the agreed pick up area holding a branded Exclusive Island Tours Ja sign, helps with your luggage and takes you straight to your resort in a cool, air conditioned vehicle.

We track your flight automatically, so if you land early or late there is nothing to worry about. Complimentary refreshments are waiting on board.

3. Money: USD or Jamaican Dollars?

  • US dollars are widely accepted at resorts, attractions and many shops in tourist areas.
  • Jamaican dollars (JMD) are handy for local markets, roadside food stops and small purchases, and you will often get better value paying in local currency.
  • Major credit and debit cards work at hotels, restaurants and most attractions. Let your bank know you are travelling.
  • Carry some small bills for tips, snacks and souvenirs.

4. Tipping Etiquette

Tipping is appreciated and is a lovely way to say thank you for great service. Here is a simple guide:

  • Private drivers and tour guides: 10% to 20% of the tour or transfer price, depending on your experience.
  • Raft captains, waterfall guides and boat crews: a few US dollars per person.
  • Restaurants: check the bill first, as some include a service charge.
  • Hotel porters and housekeeping: a few dollars goes a long way.

5. Travelling Safely and Comfortably

Jamaica is a warm and welcoming island, and like anywhere you visit, a few smart habits make your trip even smoother.

  • Use licensed, pre booked transportation rather than unmarked taxis.
  • Keep valuables in your hotel safe and carry only what you need for the day.
  • Stay hydrated and wear reef safe sunscreen; the Caribbean sun is strong.
  • Ask your driver for recommendations. Our chauffeurs are trusted local guides who know every parish.
